Planning to buy a home? Tempted to
look on your own, without an agent?
Want to save the commission by
working directly with the seller?
Good luck!
If you answered “YES!” to those
questions, consider the steps you
will need to take to find the perfect
home. First, plan to take 2-4 weeks
off work (both you and your spouse).
Next, with a pad and pencil, look
throughout the newspaper and write
down the phone numbers of all
homes that seem like a match. Drive
through favored neighborhoods and
write down the phone numbers and
addresses of all “For Sale By Owner”
homes.
Now, call the owners you’ve
identified. Expect to reach a lot of
answering machines because most
sellers are at work, not at home.
When you do reach a seller, ask lots
of questions. What size is the home?
How did you arrive at the asking
price? Will you pay closing costs?
When are you moving? Once you’ve
identified homes to visit, set up
appointments, and be prepared for
an interesting day.
Chances are you’ll quickly learn why
most serious sellers list their home
with an agent. Agents attract serious
buyers with the financial ability to
pay a fair price. That’s exactly what
serious sellers are seeking. If you’re
serious about buying a home, why
not begin at the beginning - by
calling an agent?
